How You Can Help Minimize the Heat Leaving Your Home

December 22, 2017

As the temps continue to get cooler, the last thing you want to have to worry about is sustaining a comfortable home. In an ideal world, you would be able to relax in a warm home and not thinking twice about what’s taking place outside. Of course, things don’t work that way, and there are a few things that could be taking place in your home that might result in a need for furnace repair or a higher than normal energy bill.

There are a number of causes for an increase in your energy bill, but we will share some of the most common reasons.

  1. Heat is getting out through the glass of your windows – the glass on your windows are cold from the outdoor temps and when the warm air makes contact, it impacts the indoor air by reducing some of the heat. To help reduce the effect that the glass has on your cozy home, make sure you’ve closed your drapes during the evening hours and make sure that your windows are receiving light during the day before opening them.
  2. Lack of attic insulation – if you live in an older home there’s a possibility that there is a lack of insulation. This means you could be losing heat through your attic, which in-turn makes your furnace work harder, and may eventually result in furnace repair. When you go to check out your attic’s insulation, you’ll want to see if the insulation is even or below the joists. If that’s the case, it’s likely your attic needs some additional insulation.
  3. Gaps in windows and doors – it’s not always easy to tell by just taking a quick look if there are large gaps. Be sure to thoroughly look at all of your windows and doors to decide whether it requires weather stripping to take care of those gaps. Similar to attic insulation, window and door gaps can make your furnace work harder, increasing the chance of furnace repair down the line.
